Art
Intent
At Dilton Marsh C of E Primary School we believe that high quality Art education provides the foundations for understanding the world around us. Through our Artcurriculum at Dilton Marsh we aim to inspire pupils to be curious and creative thinkers who develop a variety of techniques and skills through exploring a variety of different styles. We want pupils to develop the confidence to develop their own styles and techniques.
At Dilton Marsh we are inclusive by design, celebrating the diversity within our school family and further afield. The nurture, compassion and kindness we demonstrate is harnessed in clear routines and explicit expectations ensuring our children feel safe and develop a strong sense of belonging from the outset.
‘A place to belong and grow together’ enables pupils at Dilton Marsh to have the determination to overcome challenges they may face. This is underpinned by our 4 key values, Belong, Encourage, Endure and Serve. Our aim at Dilton Marsh CofE Primary School is to ‘grow’ individuals who are aspirational, resilient and determined and leave our school as confident individuals who will make valid contributions to our future society.
Our art curriciulum aims to inspire pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of techniques and skills. We want pupils to develop the confidence to question and observe artists, cultures and movements. hrough our scheme of work, we aim to build an awareness of how artists shape our lives at multiple scales and over time. We hope to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.
At Dilton Marsh C of E Primary School, our scheme of work enables pupils to meet the end of keystage attainment targets in the National curriculum. The aims also align with those in the National curriculum and in the EYFS framework.
Implementation
At Dilton Marsh C of E Primary School, we use Plan Bee to develop our progressive art curriculum. We have outlined a clear progression of skills and knowledge across each year group. Our Progression of skills and knowledge shows the skills taught within each year group and how these develop to ensure that attainment targets are securely met by the end of each key stage. Art key concepts are woven across all units rather than being taught discretely as seen in the progression. Art is timetabled in our school to focus on a specific unit each term, this is outlined in our progression and woven into our whole school overview.
Cross-curricular links are included throughout each unit, allowing children to make connections and apply their artskills to other areas of learning. Lessons incorporate various teaching strategies from technique lessons to designing and creating final pieces.
Impact
An enquiry-based approach to learning will allow teachers to assess children against the National curriculum expectations for Art.
Each lesson includes opportunities for teachers to assess pupils against the learning objectives. Children have sketch books to present their skills and technoques they ahve been practising, also allow for opportinities for self-evealuation.
Pupils should leave school equipped with a range of skills and knowledge to enable them to study art with confidence at Key stage 3. We hope to shape children into curious and inspired artists with respect and appreciation for the world around them alongside an understanding of the interconnection between the past and present.
